2012 the Hollywood movie centralized its core theme around the mega-disaster scenario first expounded by Charles H. Hapgood whom was a professor of the history of science at Keene College in New Hampshire. In this theory the entire crust of the planet Earth moves as one piece displacement of the physical poles into new locations would occur.
The most vocal modern researcher of the theory is Patrick Geryl. Mr Geryl insists that the Maya and Egyptians knew of this phenomenon and predicted it for 21-12-2012. Actually an enormous chunk of the 2012 movie seems to be lifted from his work. For those not familiar with him he has stated that the safest place on Earth will be the Drakensburg Mountains of South Africa. It is then likely no coincidence then that the closing scenes of the film has the survivors on course for that precise location!
In his research project Hapgood found the various ancient maps of the world that depict a very different planet which included a lost land mass (such as the infamous Piri Reis map). These often depict some geographic areas as ice free, for example Antarctica, which should of course not be in human history. Ancient maps should not be depicting such things, in fact Antarctica was not ‘officially’ discovered until 1820.
Crust plates move [plate tectonics] over time so we do know the Earth crust is unstable. The current consensus is that this is a very slow geological process which takes millions of years to produce even barely observable changes.
Hapgood sought out a mechanism that could explain radical shifts and changes of polar locations. His theory sought to explain a crust shift of some 30 degrees in a short period of time. No easy feat!
In the 1950s, Hapgood developed a theory called Earth Crust Displacement (ECD) which could account the shift, and yet not contradict the theory of continental drift. The basic notion of ECD is that the earth’s lithosphere, although composed of individual plates, can at times move as a whole over the asthenosphere. Applying the correct degree of energetic force to the entire framework of plates would cause them all to slide over the more gelatinous magma below.
Hapgood believed that last ice age ended around 12,000 years ago when the mass of glacial ice covering the northern continents caused the lithosphere to ‘slip’ over the asthenosphere, moving Antarctica. He posited that the event occurred over just several centuries. Antarctica’s movement to the polar region caused the development of its ice cap. Similarly, the end of the ice age was facilitated by shifting the northern ice sheets out of the arctic zone.
Support for this theory was given in a forward by Albert Einstein to one of Hapgood’s books in 1953:
In a polar region there is continual deposition of ice, which is not symmetrically distributed about the pole. The earth’s rotation acts on these unsymmetrically deposited masses, and produces centrifugal momentum that is transmitted to the rigid crust of the earth. The constantly increasing centrifugal momentum produced in this way will, when it has reached a certain point, produce a movement of the earth’s crust over the rest of the earth’s body... (Hapgood, 1958, p. 1)
It has been often claimed evidence for the shift has been found in the form of animals suited to temperate zones being found fast frozen in ice blocks.
The researcher Graham Hancock states that findings from Admiral Byrds explorations showed rivers had flowed in Antarctica as late as 5000BC. Physical evidence of this flowing water means that we are wrong about the history of the continent in some manner at least.
Recent discoveries of under ice mountain ranges on the continent also strongly suggest we have misunderstood the geological history of the region as these would have been carved out by movement not by a fairly static cover of snowfall frozen to permafrost.
Of course the theory and the maps on which it is largely based remain open to interpretation. Many researchers do not agree with the model as proposed by Hapgood. We can’t exactly just ask the map makers what they were depicting and whether they just drew additional lands based on hearsay.
This is a very in depth subject with scholarly debate going well beyond the scope of this article. Suffice to say the theory is not accepted generally by relevant scientific bodies. There is evidence for and against, but currently those against are in a strong position as the onus of evidence provision is on those with new radical theories.
As to whether there can be slips of the entire crust I would err on the side of maybe. Have they happened before, perhaps so. Will one occur around 21-12-2012? I doubt it.
I certainly hope not.
If it did occur we would indeed see greater than one mile high tsunamis racing around the globe and super storms with incredible wind velocity. Earthquakes would buckle nations and volcanoes would explode furiously. It would be difficult for anyone to survive such a mega-catastrophe. Difficult, put perhaps not impossible.

I think its unfortunate should the cosmic energies flow in the direction of world wide catastrophe in order to fulfill the shift of the ages. I personally have no fear for such a thing. Am I being punished? I truly attempted to do good, love, and be compassionate in my life. If those efforts and the efforts of many others are ultimately destroyed by earthly forces then maybe the cosmic energies need to remember that we are them and they are us and perhaps there needs to be more clear communication to the masses as to what is expected in order to keep things in the divine flow.
But to punish all those who tried with all their hearts to do the right thing? Wow. If thats the case, maybe thats where humanity derived its predisposition for destructive wastefulness of precious resources. I think the saying goes “As things are above, so to are they below”.

Yeah it would seem pretty lame if no matter how much we strived for good the same unpleasant results befell us. It seems we have to just go with the intuition that being compassionate leads to a more pleasant experience for ourself and those around us.

What the **** is all this ‘if I’m good I get saved’ if a wall falls down around 100 people and 20 of them are good do the 20 good people get saved? no they all get crushed. this cosmic energy as you put it, it’s not conscious its just energy acting how energy acts, its never been selective between good and evil you ******* *****.
I’d bet my house on it that you’re an American……

The book is titled “The Revelation” – not the Book of Revelations. How can anyone take you seriously? If you had actually read the book you might know the title of it. You are only repeating what you have heard, therefore I cannot take you seriously.
— Wayne · Dec 26, 07:28 AM · #
Hi Wayne,
This article does not mention the Bible books but I will answer you anyway.
‘The Revelation’ is commonly referred to as the book of revelations when being discussed in a descriptive manner. If such a trivial matter means you ignore all the data on this site then good riddance to you and your closed mind.

Thinking about the end of the world, I don’t believe we can predict that but as for earth crust displacement? The earth is a living entity and will eventually come to know we are killing it with our own filth.(pollution)If a man is laying on the ground getting repeatedly stabbed would he not fight for his own life? I view the earth in the same manner, it will eventually fight for it’s life.

There’s no credible proof of any kind that anything out of the ordinary will happen in 2012. It’s a known fact that the Mayans didn’t predict any specific events, cataclysmic or otherwise, for 2012. 12-21-2012 is when the Mayan “Long Count” calendar ends. That’s it. But you know what? My calendar ends on December 31st of every year, but the world hasn’t ended yet, now has it? And furthermore, how many times in the past 20 years was the world supposed to end?
*Nostradamus claimed in July of 1999 that “a great king of terror would come from the sky”. It’s been over 10 years and there hasn’t been any kings of terror come from the sky yet.
*Y2K in 2000? Well, that one sure was a dud, wasn’t it?
*“The Apocalypse” was also supposed to come on May 5th, 2000, but guess what? That one never happened either.
And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I imagine there are countless more. Look, I’m all for doing good for the world and helping those in need. In fact, I applaud anyone and everyone who does because, let’s face it, being a good person in this world today is very difficult and can be a true test of one’s faith in his/her respective higher power and own sanity. But the more this false “doomsday” prediction circles the world, panic is going to spread and, quite possibly, wars will erupt. People will likely die in this confusion, but it won’t be from any global cataclysm. And those who bought into the whole 2012 “doomsday”, in addition to being the ones responsible for said deaths, will be all the more humiliated when the clock quietly rolls over and 12-22 begins.

i think it could happen… anything could happen… but still even if we dont believe it… we still of to over view and study more… i mean mayans dont say when the world ends… priest dont say when the world ends… nobody knows for sure… people follow religion… some science its doesent matter they still dont know what might happen further research could give us an idea but not exact… thw world will end someday maybe today.. maybe tomorrow maybe 2012 but know one knows… still if u believe it might happen then take the precation… get ready… dont let nobody tell wut might or not happen… u decide of u believe or not its your life… i believe the world will end whenever its happens… i dont know when but my world will end soon and so will yours… no matter wut u do…everyone will die someday… only time decides out destiny

Oh ya its going down, we can all tell the world is warming not from globel warming but, from the sun getting hotter. Globel warming is just giving it a shot of steroids, making things being pushed a little faster. There will be a climax for mother earth, and i dont believe she will enjoy it. As to say how, when, or why is just to worry your self more. All of are fates are already placed in the great book of life. What will happen, will happen,no matter how much we concern are selfs with it. If i could give anyone advise, dont scare your children just be prepared. Love your God honor your family, neighbor, and friends. We are still being watched by are lord in heaven, we are being judged for are works, make them good.

How much of science facts began by upsetting the beliefs of mainstream accepted scientific theory. It’s the way science works. There are 2 theories put forth by Hancock based partly on Hapgoods work. The main theory is that an advanced technological civilization existed before the last iceage. Some of the support for this theory is ECD. The second part of the theory is that this civilization is trying to comminicate forward some of thier knowledge from antiquity. I believe both these theories are worth investigation. As in the past, established “scientist” aren’t willing to let go of their beliefs. This happens everytime their is a radical knew theory(i.e.Darwin). Some or all of Hancock’s theories(backed up by evidence provided by Hapgood, West, Shoch, and others) might be valid. With the daily events in the news becoming more disturbing (including climate change, eartquakes, global economic crisis, and ineffectual govenments), one would think that scientist would be more intrested in what might happen. I beleive there is evidence for an ancient technological civilization. The rest remains to be seen. I hope we are not headed for an apocalypse, but there are alot of signs we are. At any rate, I plan to enjoy my life to the fullest until the end.

even if there is no hard core facts for the general public to go on to prove something like this, just as the movie went…do you really think our governments would tell us? no they wouldn’t. There are too many of us to save, and there wouldn’t be enough resources to feed all of us after something like that. My thoughts on this is the world can end in 2 years, but I’m going to live my life without fear. I wouldn’t want my last 2 years alive to be in fear. If the world does come to an end good bye to all because I am 1000% sure no one of the general public will know about it until they are being swallowed by the ocean. If you believe this will happen make your peace with god and hope he exist.

all of you that r saying believe in god, your idiots, this is going to happen, the myans were absolute genius about using science to predict the future. god has nothing to do with it, being good or bad doesnt, its about how well you can use common sence and survive with out technology, i for one am ready for what ever happens and i dont believe in god in the slightest bit. so all of you that r just chilling saying i believe so im good, you’ll all have a sermon waiting for you at the bottom of the ocean!!enjoy your last 2 years

K-Dog,
The Maya people do not predict an Earth Crust Displacement, this is something that was predicted by modern day 2012 researchers.
I also disagree with your conviction that being good or bad will have no effect. Every culture involved with the 2012 subject states it is wholly to do with whether we are living positively or negatively. Whether you or I believe in God may well have little to do with that. My advice is be good, be very good.
Cheers
Bruce

the moment I’ve watched this movie… I thought that it was just a simple scifi-movie concerning the end of the world… but when I found out through internet that everything has a basis… but still after all it was just a theory and its not yet proven. well if it will happen I guess the scientists and expert should be very aware of this and they should tell it and broadcast what should be done to survive since it is the worst natural phenomena that would ever happen… it is really crazy if we will just believe it without any biological evidences that it happened hundreds of thousands of years ago… still, a theory is a theory…

If you don’t believe in God the father I would seriously get a change in your way of thinking. If the world is coming to an end, then, if nothing else, there is a peace that comes from believing. There is nothing wrong about believing in a God that can save you from this world. The act of being good or bad, well that depends on your perspective of good and bad. In the old testiment, the lord told Jehu to go in and kill the people of a city……a bad act for a good cause….So do good for yourself, your family, and the one true God, and let the world take care of itself. No one person can predict the future precisely, but you can be prepared by being able to take care of yourself and the ones you love. Most of the people on these pages won’t know what to do but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!
